Individual Dental and Vision Coverage
If you are self-employed or if you are not offered dental and vision benefits through a group plan, there are options available to the individual market. Buying dental and vision insurance does not have to be a painful process because most of these insurance plans offer low-cost, monthly payment options with immediate coverage benefits. Furthermore, because of the similarities in how insurance companies design and administer these two coverage options, dental and vision insurance plans are often marketed, sold, and managed together. However, you do have the option to purchase one or the other depending on your needs and budget.
Dental and vision insurance is very similar to health insurance in regards to the different forms of insurance. The two main types of coverage include managed-care plans and indemnity plans.
- Managed-Care (PPO & HMO)
Under a managed-care plan covered individual or family members participate in a network of medical professionals that agree to perform services for patients at deeply discounted pre-negotiated rates and usually will submit the claim to the insurance company for you. If the patient chooses to see one who is not designated as a "preferred provider" or within the "network" that patient may be required to pay a greater share of the fee-for-service. - Indemnity Coverage
This type of coverage allows the individual or family to choose any doctor or dentist that they wish to receive care from without paying additional costs. A monthly premium is paid by the insured and/or an employer to an insurance company, which then reimburses them for the services rendered. The insurance company usually pays between 50% - 80% of the doctor office fees depending on the covered procedure performed; the remaining 20% - 50% is paid by the insured. Similar to the managed-care coverage, these plans often have a pre-determined or set deductible amount which varies from plan to plan.
